![]() Black is available by special order only, and is subject to a modest up-charge. It's just as body-friendly as the natural and anodized colours. Though it's called black, it's really a very dark graphite. There is also a 'black' oxide that is achieved with heat. Anodized niobium in sunlight is absolutely amazing no matter which colour it is. Frequently, you can see hints of both the colour above and the colour below the one you select. In the higher voltage range, from copper through lime, the colours can appear quite different depending on the type of light and its angle. Generally, they're in the lower voltage range - up to the golds. Some anodized colours are more 'stable' than others, meaning that their shift in different lights is minimal. The oxide is as hypo-allergenic as the uncoloured metal.īecause the colour you see is based on refracted and reflected light, there can be some variability to the colour you see in different lighting conditions, like the dancing and shifting colours of a soap bubble. The anodized colours range from shades of gold, silver, copper, brass and bronze – 'normal' metal colours - to blues, purples, pinks, teals and greens – not so normal. The colours can shift and dance a bit depending on the light. The thickness of the oxide layer, which is dependent on the voltage applied, determines the colour you see. This transparent oxide layer bends the light as it passes through and reflects off the metal, like a prism splits white light into a rainbow. The colour comes from the build up of the natural oxide of the metal itself. There are no dyes, pigments, paints or toxic chemicals used. In effect, I electrocute the jewellery while being careful not to electrocute myself. Niobium is coloured by electricity alone in a process called anodization. When it's coloured, it's absolutely amazing. When it's polished, it's very close to the colour of stainless steel or platinum - not quite silver. In its natural state, niobium is metallic grey.
